Information about rotating Students, Interns, and Residents
Oakview Dermatology and its staff are committed to educating new healthcare professionals about the skin and its diseases. Dr. Sammons is an assistant professor at two medical schools, Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and West Virginia's School of Osteopathic Medicine, where she helps to train the newest physicians. Additionally, Dr. Sammons and Nathan will often have medical students, physician assistant students, interns, and residents shadowing them in the office. Also, our nursing staff may have medical assistants shadowing them on occasion. Despite our commitment to teaching, our patients are always welcome to request that the students not be involved in their care.

One of the questions that patients often have is "what is the difference between a student, intern, or a resident." Medical Students have completed a four year undergraduate degree and have been accepted into an accredited medical school. During the first two years of medical school training, students spend most of their time in the classroom setting learning about the body and its systems. In the final two years of their training, medical students spend all of their time in clinical settings learning hands-on clinical medicine. Interns are physicians who have completed their medical school training and have earned the title of "doctor." They are in their first year of post-graduate training and often spend time in several different clinical settings before training for their chosen area of medical specialty. Residentsare physicians who have entered a specific area of medical specialty training. During residency training, residents hone their medical skills in on their chosen area of specialization. Most residency programs are 2-4 years in length. At Oakview Dermatology you may encounter family medicine residents and dermatology residents.

Scheduling a Roation
Oakview Dermatology invites you to apply for a rotation at our site. We will gladly accept medical students, physician assistant students, nurse practitioner candidates, medical assistant students, interns, and residents. You are welcome to apply for as little as one day, or as long as 4 weeks depending upon your necessary requirements. Whether we grant your request or not will be based upon what times we have available. We limit the number of rotators to no more than two students/physicians at any given time so that we can provide an effective learning experience while still providing quality care to our patients. Additionally, if you require housing during your rotation, we will have to coordinate with the medical education department at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital to make sure that there is housing available during the rotation times you are requesting.

For some rotators, you will also be required to complete paperwork for O'Bleness Memorial Hospital (OMH), so that your rotation can receive appropriate credit. If you have already done this, you are still required to fill out our request form below. By filling out Oakview Dermatology's request form, we can ensure that you are on our office calendar and that we will be expecting you, as well as ensuring that we have all the necessary contact information to get in touch with you in the advent of an office schedule change. If you have questions regarding when you have to complete OMH paperwork or how to go about doing so, please contact Jerry Chester at 740-592-9334.
